hongjohnny - things you said through your teeth
summary: hongjoong and johnny work together at a law firm and one of them is not having a good time. (it’s only a law firm because i’ve been watching better call saul)
sorry for making johnny suh suffer and be general pathetic it’s one of my many hobbies refusing to read this over even one single time to catch any typos or mistake so if you find any look away i am not aiming for personal improvement
right from the start (something like over four years ago, at a party where the only thing hongjoong remembers is that johnny suh stole the few edible cookies he was saving for his friends), johnny suh has been insufferable. hongjoong would never say that johnny is making his life hell, that would put too much power in his hands. however, he can confidently declare that being in the same room as johnny suh does not brighten up his days. worse even, it makes him regret ever accepting the job offer from johnny himself.
“johnny? johnny suh?” yunho had asked when hongjoong brought up the mail he’d receive one day. it was eloquently titled “r u still looking 4 a job.” unfortunately yes, hongjoong was very much looking for a job. and the stunt his last clients pulled didn’t leave him with the best reputation. “he was so nice!” yunho said.
oh, how joyous life must be for one who thinks johnny suh is nice. johnny suh is polite, hongjoong can’t hold that against him - even though it’s selective politeness that rarely applies to hongjoong himself. johnny is known at the office for representing old people trying to divorce and it would be funnier if that wasn’t also one of the most lucrative department. old people divorce, and johnny suh gets to drive a brand new tesla. hongjoong isn’t very fond of the irony of life.
he’s always a little misunderstood by the world around him, always a little outside of the things his peers were doing. it’s never bothered him before this, because at least that meant that hongjoong was just being unapologetically himself. this, however, is like being put in a torture chamber with slowly rising boiling water.
no one gets how annoying and rude and a general pain in the ass johnny is. everyone adores him. he makes sure everyone adores him too, but it seems so easy for people to think of johnny suh in a positive way.
even when johnny got hongjoong the job, he was being a dick about it.
“i hope you understand how i’m putting myself on the line by making you this offer,” he said.
“then why are you making it in the first place?”
johnny had rolled his eyes like hongjoong was being voluntarily obtuse. “i have a case that i believe only you can take on. this isn’t charity, technically, but also it is a little bit. no one else is going to offer you a job.”
hongjoong had said “oh yeah? then let’s see!” and has been back to johnny’s office a week later after being rejected from every other law firm in the city.
the case johnny had handpicked for him had turned out to be surprisingly interesting. something that hongjoong only could defend the right way. not that he would ever admit that to johnny.
six months later, hongjoong still somehow works there. case after case that falls on his desk, most of them referrals from johnny himself. hongjoong would feel grateful for the work if it wasn’t so obvious that johnny was handing him all of his worst cases.
his latest “gift” is building a class action against a retirement home that has been accused of overcharging his clients. it’s long tedious work that forces hongjoong to spend more hours than he should be at the office. it certainly does not help that all week, johnny has also been leaving work late. until they’re the only two left on their floor and hongjoong has to force himself to ignore the glances johnny is sending his way.
usually, when hongjoong finally logs out of his computer, johnny does the same and they share an elevator on the way down. if hongjoong is lucky, it’s in silence, if he’s not then johnny tries to make conversation. pleasant and friendly conversation. it freaks hongjoong out and he always walks faster to leave the building.
tonight, hongjoong is still on the phone with one of the potential plaintiff when johnny starts to pack up. instead of going to the elevator, he goes the opposite way towards hongjoong desk with a smile on his face. he stands there for three minutes, patiently waiting while hongjoong explains to the lovely lady on the phone that he’ll be available at 9am tomorrow to continue this conversation.
he sighs when he hangs up and bangs his forehead on his desk. “god, kill me,” he mutters.
“tough client?” johnny asks, smile so obvious in his voice that hongjoong wonders if he’s a good enough of a lawyer to get away with murder.
“shut up,” he says through his teeth. “she’s as tough as all of the other 70 year olds i have to deal with every day, no thanks to you.”
johnny leans on the back of honjoong’s chair, making him jolt backward and bash his forehead on the corner of his desk. just to add insult to injury. he yelps in pain and johnny completely ignores him. “but think of all the good things you’re doing! helping the eldery, making sure someone stands up for them. it’s really commendable.”
“i’m just doing the job you don’t want.”
johnny gasps. “that’s not true! i would love to help the elderly, i already do that every day even. but this is a really good case for you, an opportunity to get a big win.” he sounds so serious when he says that, almost, and it makes hongjoong sick to admit it, sincere.
“now!” johnny says with a clap of hands. “how about we go grab dinner together to mend all of your sorrows? ha! how does that sound?”
hongjoong looks at him dead in the eyes, waiting for johnny to burst out laughing. it never comes. instead he grows impatient the longer hongjoong takes time to respond. “i’d rather die,” he mumbles between his teeth.
“what was that?”
“i said,” he clears his throat, “and i mean by this no disrespect to you as a lawyer at this firm or as a colleague, but i would truly rather die than go “grab dinner”,” he even mimics the quotes with his hands, “with you.
johnny blinks a few times and stares at him like it’s most surprising thing he’s ever heard. hongjoong still doesn’t understand how someone like him can be so successful. after an awkward silence, johnny goes for a nervous laugh, maybe to recover from the quite cruel blow hongjoong just did to him.
“funny,” johnny says, voice dry. “you’re a funny guy. good night then.” he turns back on his heels and leaves hongjoong dumbfounded in front of his desk.
maybe hongjoong hates johnny, but he’s no monster. he doesn’t actually want to harm the guy. he thought it was going to be one of their classic i would rather die than breathe the same air as you how was your weekend. though maybe the fact that such a thing has never happened before should have clued hongjoong in that yeah, something is up here.
he runs across the open space to catch the elevator, but the one johnny’s in is already going down. he calls for another one and anxiously waits the few seconds it takes to get here, before he rushes in and spamms the ground level button.
johnny is barely through the gate when hongjoong catches up to him. “wait!” he says, out of breath. “what’s wrong?” johnny stares at him blankly. “just tell me what’s wrong. like i’m sorry if i offended you or anything like that, i wasn’t meaning to hurt your feelings it was just… a joke.”
johnny mumbles something.
“what?”
“a joke,” he repeats. “me, i’m the joke.”
hongjoong chuckles nervously. “yeah and i’m the joke too, right? isn’t that how this works?”
johnny gasps and looks around like anyone is here to witness what’s going on. “no,” he says, mouth still hanging a little too wide from disbelief. “you are not a joke, and neither am i. we are two respectable people and i was trying to ask you out but you said you would rather die than spend a pleasant dinner with me.”
when he puts it like that, it does make hongjoong look like the bad guy. it probably reflects even worse on his character that he still stands by that statement.
he sighs, and does his best to imagine himself in court, trying to persuade a jury and de-escalate a bad situation. “listen,” he starts. “i am genuinely sorry for the way i reacted. not even going to utter an excuse, that was just mean and shitty on my part. for that i am sorry. but, just so we’re clear here, what you are offering me is… what? a date?”
johnny gulps. “sure.”
hongjoong nods. “okay, then i will politely decline. thanks for the offer i feel very flattered but…” he tries to find a way to sugar coat it and fails. “no,” he finishes one of the worst pleas of his life.
johnny straightens up his tie, runs a hand through his hair. as if even a strand of it has moved since this morning. “alright,” he says in a small voice. “that’s fine and, well, understandable given how you seem to be feeling about me. i’m not exactly sure how you managed to gather so much hatred towards me, but i would rather you not want to die when you see me.”
“yeah, that’s fair. i’ll try to… hate you less i guess.”
johnny smiles. “how kind of you.” then he pauses, looks over hongjoong’s face. “did i ever do anything to warrant this or…”
hongjoong can feel the heat coming up his cheeks. “oh god. no, yes, maybe, probably not? it would have been for a stupid reason anyway. literally don’t even think about it, let’s just be cordial from now on.”
johnny chuckles. “considering i thought we were already cordial, i was going to suggest we try becoming friends. but, sure. cordial it is.” he shakes hongjoong’s hand like they’re sealing a deal and wishes him a good night before vanishing in his tesla.
the next morning, hongjoon shows up with two cups of coffee and puts one of them down on johnny’s desk on the way to his own. “just so we’re clear,” he tells johnny when he comes over hongjoong’s desk with a smirk on his face and a thin line of coffee above his top lip. “this is not me courting you. this is a totally platonic and apologetic coffee.”
johnny nods but the smirk doesn’t leave his face. “we’ll see about that!”
maybe hongjoong should just go back to hating him full time.

Date: 2022-06-15 06:31 pm (UTC)reallizing now that this is absolutely nothing like what the prompt was trying to achieve. ah well, at least someone came to yeosang's show.
—-------------------------------------------
it’s awkward. yeosang was expecting it, or course, but that doesn’t really make it any easier to live through. he clears his throat and both yeonjun and seungyoun turn their heads to him in an instant. he claps his hands and it resonates louder than he was expecting in the small backstage room. “it’s great finally meeting you,” yeosang says with his MC voice. it’s not a great MC voice, he’s still working on it, but it should do the trick at making people talk. at least out of politeness. “hongjoong and wooyoung have mentioned both of your names before, they speak of you very highly.”
seungyoun makes the facial expression of a sad puppy. it’s kind of awful to witness. absolutely does not help yeosang’s nerves. “aw yeosang, thank you for saying that. i care about hongjoong a lot, he’s a really good friend.”
yeosang wants to say yeah thanks i know i’m in a band with him and he’s one of my best friends, but he figures that might come off as more petty than he feels. just slightly more petty.
“wooyoung talks about you so much,” yeonjun says with a smile that makes yeosang feel a little less like a butterfly pinned down on a display and a little more like a human being. a great improvement to his mood. yeonjun looks at seungyoun with a polite smile. “and it’s a pleasure to officially meet you too.”
before the riveting conversation can go on any further, a staff member comes knocking on the door of the small waiting room they’ve been pushed into by yeosang's manager (under wooyoung’s orders). yeosang goes back on stage to actually work, and he’s able to step back a few minutes later, right before it’s time for woodz to do his pre-recording. he asks around to see where the two guests went and he’s surprised when he hears they’re still in the waiting room. so yeosang heads back in there, and knocks softly on the door before opening it just a little and freezing on the spot.
from the inside of the room, he hears muffled sounds.
if he had been any less experienced in walking on people making out, yeosang would have kept pushing the door open and barged in without any finesse. however, and unfortunately, this is not his first walk in on something he should not see. thought usually when it happens it’s in the safety of his dorm and he doesn’t fear anybody else stumbling in and potentially ruining lives.
he could close the door and pretend like he hasn’t heard nor seen anything, but then in between the (quite frankly gross) kissing noises he hears soft whispers and he figures it might be in his duty to protect nice moments for the friends of his friends. he quietly slips through the door and closes it as loud as he can without actually breaking the thing. he clears his throat and turns back to face seungyoun and yeonjun, still holding each other close.
“sorry to ruin your moment,” yeosang says. “but this is really not a safe place to do this. we don’t even have locks on the doors.”
yeonjun raises an eyebrow at seungyoun like this is news to him. seungyoun smiles sheepishly. “i thought i heard something click when i went to close it. sorry i was in a hurry to do something and i didn’t double check.”
yeonjun rolls his eyes and drops a little kiss to the corner of seungyoun’s mouth. yeosang quickly looks away before he’s forced to burn their image in his mind. “sorry for the trouble,” yeonjun says and yeosang takes a second to look back up and realize he’s being talk to. “we don’t really get the opportunity to see each other very often, so we got carried away.”
yeosang shrugs. “i get it.” he clears his throat. he shouldn’t ask, really, but… this is his opportunity. sure he took on the MC job because it’s fun and it’s something he likes and also because it’s something that would help both his image and the band. but also, and just as an afterthought, he did also take the job because of the social status it would bring. he’s heard stories, legends almost, of MCs at bigger show orchestrating hours worth of drama. he’s heard that the MCs end up knowing so much about everyone regardless if they want to or not. and maybe, just a little bit, yeosang wanted that for himself.
but the problem is that he’s MC’ing on the show. it’s no inkigayo, most of the bigger groups don’t even come here anymore. and the newer groups… well, yeosang has been having a hard time really coaxing any juicy story out of them. so this is it. his moment to become the guy he’s always dreamt of being: the keeper of secrets.
“so,” he starts, drags the vowels as much as he can. “how did you two become a thing?”
seungyoun seems surprised at the question and a light chuckles escapes him.
“well it’s… kind of a long story,” yeonjun mumbles.
for a second, yeosang thinks that he might have overstepped. and then seungyoun smiles reassuringly - and it works, yeosang does feel reassured. what the hell. “you know how it is in this business,” seungyoun says. “everyone knows everyone. kind of.”
“you know wooyoung,” yeonjun says like he just remembered the concept. “you know what it’s like!”
yeosang frowns. “i know what what is like?”
yeonjun makes a vague movement with his hands, looks back at seungyoun with obvious distress. “you know… what it’s like to be gay in this environment. like, everyone knows each other. that’s how wooyoung knows people. you know that,” he adds for good measure.
well, for one, yes yeosang does know what it’s like to be “gay in this environment” because he is also gay in an environment. it’s even the same environment! but apparently he hasn’t been invited to any of the “gay people in enviroments” meetings because he was not aware one of the perks was that he knew every other gay idol. he’s gonna have a strong word with wooyoung when he gets back. if he can remember to be angry about this.
“fine,” he finds himself saying. “whatever. just be a little more discreet maybe? at least lock the door next time.”
seungyoun doesn’t drop his smile. “this door doesn’t lock, you said so yourself. and it’s the show, it’s not like anyone is gonna come knocking on every door trying to find who ate which number from the inkigayo sandwiches.”
yeosang frowns. “maybe the show has its own version of the inkigayo sandwiches. what do you even know? maybe everyone knows this is the hottest place for gossip.”
yeonjun raises an eyebrow. “is it, now?”
yeosang deflates a little. they’re looking at him a little too seriously and it’s hard to keep his marble cold facade in front of them. “maybe not. but maybe yes! or maybe in the future.”
yeonjun smirks. “right. while you work on making this the hottest place for music shows drama, i’m gonna go back to work.” he pets seungyoun on his hip and pecks his lips quickly. “see you at the end babe.”
seungyoun grins and ruffles yeonjun’s hair a little. after some protests from him, he says, “makes you look crazier! rockier! go kill it out there my little rock star!”
yeonjun winks at him and leaves, awardly shuffling in front of yeosang who’s still standing in front of the door.
seungyoun keeps smiling at yeosang when it’s just the two of them standing on opposite corners. “thanks for being cool about this,” he says. yeosang does a poor job at hiding his surprise.
“of course. why would i be weird.”
seungyoun raises an eyebrow in his direction as he goes to gather his things. “you know i talk to hongjoong a lot, right?”
yeosang deflates. “fine. why would i be weird about this.”
seungyoun shrugs. “people have been weird before.” he straightens up and heads for the door. “say hi to hongjoong for me?” yeosang nods.
as soon as he’s alone, he takes a second to rejoice. this is the start of a turn around in his career, he can feel it. now he’s going to be known as the guy who knows something. whatever that thing might be. hopefully it might encourage more people to tell him things. and anyway, now he can gloat to-
he pauses in the middle of his celebration. wooyoung knows about this. there’s no way he doesn’t. he’s in on the whole “gay in the environment” deal. well, yeosang will have to brag about it to seonghwa. less rewarding but he doesn’t know a damn thing.
things you said while driving - mingiminghao
Date: 2022-07-06 09:11 am (UTC)there’s someone there with a cardboard that clearly says minghao on it, but minghao has never seen this person before. he makes his way through the crowd of airport arrivals tentatively, ready to run in the opposite direction if somehow his flight informations got leaked and he’s about to face a fan who is somewhere they shouldn’t be. he was told mingyu would be coming to drive him to his hotel. it’s not like mingyu to bail on minghao.
he approaches this person carefully, and is surprised with how unthreatening they look from up close considering they’re a head taller than everyone else in the crowd.
“minghao?” they ask.
he nods, grip tightening on his suitcase.
“hi,” they say with a bright smile as they lower the sign. “i’m mingi, i started working at kq while you were in china.”
minghao frowns. “have we ever been in a meeting together before?”
mingi smiles sheepishly. “haha no, i usually work with trainees or potential recruits. i was just the only one available with a car on hand. some big meeting with the higher ups came up a few hours again and everyone else has been busy with that.”
“even mingyu?” minghao asks, doubtful.
mingi nods. “he personally chose me to take his place. in case that’s some reassurance to you. haha.”
minghao doesn’t really appreciate mingi’s fake laugh but he’s not about to actually complain when apparently they’re doing him a huge favor. “sure, whatever,” he sighs. “i’m sorry i’m not the most welcoming but i’ve had a long flight, we could get going before someone spots me?”
mingi is quick to get moving, grabbing minghao’s luggage for him. body guards secure a way for him out of the arrival gate, minghao hadn’t even noticed they were there before. mingi takes them to the car park in front of the terminal, and it’s surprising how normal it feels. usually everything is perfectly timed for minghao’s arrival and he only has to walk past the door to find a driver there waiting for him.
now he has to walk through the hot and dizzying concrete of the parking lot. knocks on the window of a car and someone in the driver seat comes out of it.
“can you open the trunk?” mingi asks the stranger. he nods and mingi carefully puts minghao’s luggage in the back. at least he appreciates mingi’s dedication to delicacy. minghao doesn’t wait to be told to open the door and slides in the backseat of the car.
he vaguely says hi to the guy behind the wheel who introduces himself but minghao tunes him out. not on purpose, it’s just too much information for his brain to take in. he unlocks his phone and scrolls through the few messages that have loaded since he left the plane. mingyu is apologizing for bailing on him, says he’ll make it up to him with dinner at his hotel tonight. minghao replies that he’ll most certainly fall asleep as soon as he can get himself in a comfortable robe.
he locks his phone and the car stirs alive. minghao closes his eyes and lets himself drift to a state of almost sleep as he looks at the scenery outside.
at some point, his brain tunes back in and he distinguishes voices talking in the car.
“have you tried talking to him?” the one behind the wheel asks.
mingi sighs. “you know i’m not good at bringing it up… and it’s fine anyway. it’s not a big deal.” mingi giggles. “yunho, don’t look at me like that. i’m serious, it’s fine.”
“it’s not fine,” yunho protests. “it’s clearly been bothering you for a while with how much you’ve been bringing it up.”
it’s not like him at all, but minghao leans in and asks, “what’s wrong?”
mingi startles in surprise like they’ve forgotten minghao was in the backseat. they gulp and their eyes search for answers in yunho. yunho looks back at them and silently tells them to go for it. minghao doesn’t see mingi’s response but he can guess what it is from the way yunho sighs, shakes his head and focuses his eyes back on the road.
“so you know mingi works in recruitment, right?” yunho starts. minghao nods because he wants to be polite and sure, he distantly remembers mingi saying something along the lines. “she’s been auditioning a lot of groups lately,” yunho goes on, “but they keep getting assigned boy groups when they’ve repeatedly stated that they want to work with girl groups.”
mingi turns back in her seat to look at minghao with slight panic in her eyes. “but it’s nothing, seriously. i know they’ve been focused on debuting boy groups anyway so it’s not like they are actually recruiting girls. i’m just being picky.”
minghao shrugs. “it’s good to be picky if it’s within reason. why force yourself to accomplish tasks you don’t want when you already know what you want?”
yunho nods and mingi’s face turns serious. “it’s not that easy.”
“what’s the hold back? maybe i can help.” this certainly wouldn’t be the first time minghao has advocated for someone at the company to get a raise.
mingi gulps and looks back at the road. yunho sighs, shoulders sagging slightly and his hand finds its way to mingi’s thigh, where it rests comfortably, thumb drawing soothing circles through the fabric of mingi’s pants.
“the hold back,” yunho starts with a gentle voice, “is that mingi doesn’t think she would be accepted if she was in charge of the girls. and i keep telling her that everything will be fine, that she’s even taken care of girl trainees before and that everything went well - it was literally one of the arguments she used when she first talked about it to her manager.”
mingi groans, letting her head falls with an uncomfortable noise to the window. “it’s fine,” she mumbles. “nothing that concerns you, minghao-ssi.”
“i’m pretty sure i could slip a word or two to the right person though,” minghao maintains. “it really wouldn’t be any trouble, if anything i owe you for coming to get me from the airport. you could have just send a driver instead of coming yourself but you didn’t and, somehow, i appreciate it.”
yunho turns his head to mingi. “you could have send a driver?”
minghao spots how red the tip of her ears are. “well. yeah but then i wouldn’t have met minghao and i wouldn’t have spent time with you either. sorry for taking the opportunity to have a good time, i guess.”
minghao laughs behind his hand. “you’re a fan?” he can spot a smile in the corner of mingi’s lips.
“a little bit. i remember watching your fancams when i was a trainee. it was just… really cool.”
yunho bursts out laughing. “what she means by ‘really cool’ is that she had major gender envy when you had that long dark hair and you were always dressing like a lesbian.”
mingi gasps and slaps yunho on the arm several times, which only makes him laugh even harder. at some point, minghao joins in.
“i take it you don’t exactly work at kq, right yunho?”
mingi settles back in her seat with her arms crossed, obviously moping.
“no,” yunho says when his breathing comes back to normal. “i own a dance studio though, so i know a few people there. some of the trainees mingi is managing are also my students.”
minghao nods, silently impressed. he talks in yunho’s form. he looks like a strange dancer, he thinks, but there’s something in the way his hands travel across the wheel when he has to make a turn that’s too rhythmic to be a coincidence. “i’ll have to come check it out one day,” minghao says. “i’ve been struggling to find a good dance studio in seoul for a while now. usually i just join wherever my friends are going.”
mingi turns back in her seat, frown completely forgotten from her face. she smiles politely and hands him a card. “this is the dance studio,” she says. “i didn’t bring yunho here to promote his studio but if you’re really interested i think you should check it out. it’s a really great space. amazing vibes.”
minghao smiles and takes the card, examining it before putting it in his bag. “ah, if the vibes are good then.”
they fall into a comfortable silence for few minutes, and minghao spends that time observing the people in front of him. he’s not usually curious about the people he meets while half asleep in the backseat of a car, but there’s something funny about the scene in front of him. something oddly normal and comforting, something he hasn’t experienced in a while.
at some point, minghao leans in and asks, “so are you the boyfriend?”
“what?!” mingi’s voice cracks. “no, why would you think so. we’re just friends.” she talks fast and her words collide with yunho’s when he says, “it’s not like that but-”
minghao smirks. they really are very entertaining. “but?” he asks yunho.
he blushes after being put on the spot. he glances at mingi before focusing back on the road. “we’re… close,” he tries. “aren’t we?”
mingi lets out a shaky breath. “yeah,” she says softly. “we are. yunho was my best friend when we were training together.”
minghao raises an eyebrow. “he’s not your best friend anymore?”
mingi shrugs. “i guess he is.”
yunho nods, apparently satisfied with his restored status. “i mean,” he says after visibly thinking it over with a finger tapping his chin. “we weren’t just friends back then. technically we were but we both had feelings for each other so, like…” he stops at a red light and turns in his seat to look at minghao and mingi. he smiles when he notices the five different shades of pink on mingi’s face.
“do you want my expert external opinion?” minghao says.
yunho takes a second to look away from mingi before he nods.
“i’ve come to learn through the years that it’s never a bad idea to kiss your friends.” mingi hides her face behind her hands. “sometimes you kiss your friends and all you learn is that your friend is a bad or good kisser. important knowledge to have as a friend. and then sometimes you both learn things about each other.” minghao shrugs. “anyway, if your friend want to kiss you back, it’s never a bad thing to just kiss your friends.”
yunho gapes at him.
minghao points at the road ahead. “green light.”
he shakes his head to put his thoughts back in order. “right.”
they drive in silence for the rest of the journey, until they pull over to the front of the hotel. someone comes to retrieve minghao’s luggage and minghao tells yunho and mingi to stay seating. “just think it over!” he says as he steps out of the car. “thanks for driving me, mingi. i’ll have a word with your manager about getting you to where you belong.”
mingi’s ears are still bright red but she manages to nod and thank him briefly.
minghao watches them drive off and chuckles to himself. how amusing. maybe he should consider a career in matchmaking, this was quite exhilarating.
