New Releases

Sometimes, Forever - Soccer Mommy
Color Theory was my favourite album of 2021 and while this one will probably not even make the top 10 cut, it's still enjoyable! Sometimes, Forever certainly fits this eerie slightly morbid genre that she's been growing into, and that i certainly love.

favourite song on the album bones, unholy affliction
will listen again after this month? yes but would rather be listening to color theory instead

Summer Special [Flip That] - LOONA
i just wanted to mention this album so i could use yves' hair color in the css and to mention that i'm obsessed with fl!p that! it's so fun. absolutely no notes amazing song. it is however overshadowing the rest of the album and i cannot pay close attention to it. need u and pale blue dot got crazy though. also looove the intro, i love intros

favourite song on the album flip that that that that
will listen again after this month? yes it's loona

Heart Burn - SUNMI
i could forgive anything from sunmi just because of how hot she is. loved the mv finally a straight woman doing heterosexuality correctly (killing men and dancing bare feet in a field). the song is nice! very sunmi, nothing ground breaking but it's a nice late spring song. same for childhood, nice springy sunmi song!

favourite song on the album heart burn
will listen again after this month? mmh not sure, it didn't strike me as anything particularily memorable

Entropy - Beach Bunny
good album! i love beach bunny's voice it's so fun. the lyrics are always a bit cheesy but the music makes up for it.

favourite song on the album oxygen
will listen again after this month? maybe! i won't skip any song if they play on shuffle

New Discoveries

Day6
oh my god all i've been doing all month is listen to day6 most popular songs on spotify. they're so good. i don't even care that professional annoying guy jae is in there, all i hear is young k thanks to my super cool young k focused audition. also wonpil... god i love voices like his they're just so entertaining to listen to.

favourite album the book of us: negentropy - chaos swallowed up in love (even their album titles are right up my alley)
favourite song so hard to choose... everyday we fight is probably the song i listen to the most just because it's always the first one that plays when i hit a random day6 button. also really really love celebration godddd i love a petty anthem such great stuff

Destroy Boys
it came on shuffle while i was listening to car seat headrest last night and omg it's been so long since i listened to angry women music and i love it so much.

favourite album open mouth, open heart (the only one i've really listened to so far)
favourite song locker room bully (im obsessed with "hunting witches has turned into hunting bitches and for some reason i can't seem to relax. do me a favor and find out the facts before you come to my door ready to attack")

Things I Knowingly Missed And It's Unforgivable

Facade - Wonho
listening to it right now and wow the intro is as good as i remembered. however i do not remmeber anything else from the album. not sure why i didn't even watch the mv, probably because it was just too much music and it was too overwhelming to keep up with everything. sorry Wonho

favourite wonho promotion moment anything that has him dawn from hyuna and dawn was absolutely wonderful, truly a blessing, loved the part where hyuna tried to make them kiss

IM NAYEON - Nayeon
ok. listening to pop! for the first time now and it's fun. not realllly my jam but it is fun ! however i didn't listen to it before i heard the felix featuring song first and was not very convinced so i forgot to check the rest of the album. the felix feature is... a felix feature. i mean this with as much love for felix i have in my heart, and i do have a lot like come on have you seen the kid, but it's so strange to hear felix from stray kids in the middle of a nayeon from twice song. what is he doing here...
just heard LOVE COUNTDOWN (Feat. Wonstein)... why does he sound like justin bieber

favourite nayeon promotion moment the part where she's a lesbian

TV Shows

Things I Liked

  1. Better Call Saul

started watching this show at the beginning of the month and couldn't make it past season 3. watched breaking bad last month and i thought it was a brilliant show but also it wasn't stressful? i wasn't overly attached to any of the characters so i could handle horrible things happening to them.

but better call saul is just a tragedy, there's not even fun hyper masculinity to laugh at. well there's his brother who's allergic to electricity and that's fun but he's also a horrible person who's ruining jimmy's life and it got too unbearable to watch at some point

  2. Hannibal (NBC)

i doubt it comes as a surprise that i like hannibal but i recently finally convinced my friends to watch it and christ. i get it now. i truly get it. idk which stage of madness you have to be at to understand hannibal's motivations and see some form of kindness in his acts but i've reached it!

hannibal finally finds someone who understands him and his motives, the intentions he puts in his "craft" and it's quite moving the way he doesn't want to let go of will once he has him.

of course poor will graham, we're only on season 1 and i keep telling my friends that they've seen nothing of the gaslighting so far, like really poor will that's horrible and messed up and he doesn't deserve this but.

but. hannibal ... he's doing everything because he cares about will and it's fucked up like sooo fucked up but also. it's sweet?

tmi from viewing it with my friends:
    - was being a hannibal apologist kind of as a joke but also semi seriously, and they really took me seriously for a second and i could hear worry in their voices
    - said "finally the milf is here!!" when gillian anderson appeared and one of them said "what's a milf?". humbling.
    - they're not a fan of the one case per episode format and wished there were cases that lasted several episodes and it's so interesting to me. i don't feel that way at all coz i really miss the tv format of tv shows, where you only got one episode a week so it's necessary to not have too complicated arcs over several arcs (unless you're twin peaks)

Things I Didn't Like

  1. Stranger Things

a few weeks ago i saw a post on how they keep writing the most horrible things happening to will, and bring him absolutely no joy, and i thought "ah, interesting. surely this show can't be that bad, right? surely will gets at least a little bit of joy..."

    oh how i was wrong.

picked up the show on season 3 something like a week ago, and binge watched it out of pure hatred. the tumblr post was right, will gets absolutely no joy.

this show is going in the "things i didn't like" section but i didn't entirely just hate watch it. there's a few characters that are really good (robin heart heart) but this show is so ridiculous. kind of obsessed with their anti communist propaganda from the 80s like yeah it's historically accurate but you could be bringing some nuance to it! but anyway i don't really want to rant about the USSR, im more interested in ranting about what they're doing to will

he's one of the two canonically gay characters and unlike robin who got this really sweet coming out scene that was well done and emotionally intelligent, will gets one more traumatic event. mike essentially outs him to the viewers by using will's sexuality against him in a petty argument.

also will's stupid crush on mike makes me want to punch a wall. mike SUCKS he's one of the worst characters and the show should be trying to make will move on, because he moved out and mike literally has a girlfriend who's will's friend but No because that would mean making will grow as a character and bringing him positive and good things in his life.

it's sort of really insane how everyone in the show alienates will as if he needs any more alienation after what happened to him in season 1. it doesn't make sense that he doesn't get a sweet friendship with eleven over their shared trauma, it doesn't make sense that he's always forgotten. it's only the case because the writers forget him. it's crazy that they keep adding more good characters every season but forget to take care of their MAIN CHARACTER...

season 3 and 4 were really not great. but i do like huge slimy monsters so :/

  2. Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area

im only on episode 2 but i already hate this show and im not going to watch one more second of it.

fistly: why does it exist? i thought it wouldn't be a complete replica of the original spanish show but it is? even the names for the characters are the same... there are so many cities in the world and you couldn't even pick a new one for what IS a different character?

secondly: oh i hate this cast. absolutely no charisma around here. the professor is just a guy ? berlin isn't a terrifying piece of shit ? the only one i like is tokyo coz she's still badass but lmao her intro was so funny:

[DNA - BTS playing] Fans of K-pop boy band BTS are called ARMYS. They're all over the world. Of course, ARMY memebrs are in North Korea too. [...] The only difference between me and the other ARMY was that I had to join the real army. [War Montage]

That's hilarious!! technically terrible writing because so far her bts fan status hasn't shown up again. and it was literally the opening of the show. so it's like... wow you sure are trying to cater to general pop culture fans! good job!

finally, a point that's slightly more serious imo: the setting. they changed the setting from the original show. they're putting this show in a fantasy world/future where they're trying to unify the koreas so they created a joint economic era (JEA) (like the name of the show!) and that's how they get their angle at critiquing capitalism. but that's a terrible way to go at it.

you don't need to create a fake scenario that supposedly increases economic inequality to find economic inequality? it's.. Right Here. that's the whole point of the original show? that's why the original casa de papel was good and political, because it was very much set in present times and in our actual reality. i think changing that realistic and present-time setting is very detrimental to the message of the show. (that being said i don't really remember much of the rethoric on casa de papel so maybe it's actually not that great either)

maybe if the source material had also been a more fictional setting i wouldn't have pointed that out, but it's not. and it's so important to both the narration and why it got popular that the show was set in our current reality.

in the original show, it was crucial to their entire operation that they got the public opinion on their side. that's how the general public watching the show was able to relate to them as well. i think that's why the salvador dali mask was popular irl, it was easy to feel like the show was asking for your envolvement when it was asking for the envolvement of their general public.

but they don't do that in the korean version, and right from the start (and the lack of charisma from the cast certainly doesn't help) i don't feel connected to them. i can't relate to them the way i could relate to the original thieves because they don't live in my reality. they live in some close-to-distant future, idrk abt the time skip.

usually, when you want to make social criticism in a fantasy setting, you use the fantasy to your advantage, to make sure that your point comes across. take snowpiercer for exemple. it's a great movie on class war and the fact that it's in a completely fictional setting actually helps the point it's trying to make. the fiction is a tool to exacerbate the issues you want to portray. it's impossible to not see snowpiercer as a movie about class struggle because there's just no other way to interpret it, not like people could try and interpret real life social structures and pretend they don't understand what classes are.

but that can't happen in this show. because

    a) they don't really give great exposition on how the JEA is supposedly worse than regular depictions of south-korea in dramas (talking from someone who actually do not know much about sk politics, im really just talking about its portrayal in dramas). so they got loan shark and rapists in the JEA? mmh gonna make an educated guess and say they have that in south korea today too.

    b) so far their only point and motivation is that "JEA was supposed to be a land of opportunities but only the rich got richer. So we're gonna have to get rich by illegal means." bud... is that really all you're taking from this situation? capitalism is unfair so you have to play unfair to win? Great Social Commentary!

to conclude this long and painful ramble, i don't think this show has any idea what it's doing. the original show was good because a) mastermind plans, never seen before, always surprising of malice, and b) some kind of social commentary. this remake has neither of those. they didn't even bother to come up with a new scenario, they're seriously just remaking it but in korean. which... yes is the point of a remake... but sometimes (rarely) remakes are good. remakes can be better than the original! just not this one.

What To Look Forward To In July

Music

  • seventeen repackage. so fun that they're having a repackage like they're under SM entertainment
  • ateez propaganda !!!!!!!!!!! oh i can't wait to listen to the outro of the album tbh i love a good maddox narration
  • jhope album? listened to more that came out this morning and it's good? and fun and insane? one more day of wondering why bts ended up the way it did (it's capitalism greed)

TV Shows

  • The Boys (watched the first two episodes and this show is insane, im not entirely sure i like it yet but wow maybe we should do a worst job at depicting men in media it's too realistic!)
  • more hannibal (hopefully i actually finish season 3 this time)
  • twin peaks (i really wanna rewatch it and maybe even the most recent season, i sort of miss the ambiance)

also hopefully i start reading books again and not just ateez fanfiction this month
